- Excessive Heat: Information for Older Adults & Caregivers
(Excerpts From: EPA Publication No. EPA-100-F-05-019, Aug 2005)
The best way to avoid heat-related problems is to not get overheated:
1) Spend time in air conditioned locations (home, library, stores, etc; see if your town has a "cooling center").
2) Take a cool shower or bath.
3) Drink lots of fluids, and don't wait until you feel thirsty. Drink regularly throughout the day and night.
How can you keep cool?
1) If your health care provider asks you to limit the amount of fluids you drink, ask how much is safe to drink when it's hot. Find out an exact amount (e.g. one 12-ounce glass) and how often.
2) Avoid beverages that contain caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar (they can overheat or dehydrate you). Ask your health care provider if your medicines dehydrate you. If so, find out what to do about it (don't stop taking your medicine unless your doctor or nurse says it's OK).
3) If you live alone, have someone check on you at least twice a day during a heat wave. Ask a friend or your caregiver to check for signs of heat-related symptoms (e.g. hot, dry skin, confusion, hallucinations).
4) Call 911 if you need help or medical attention.
- Disposal of Leftover Medications
(Sources: PARADE, July 4, 2010 - and - government website)
Leftover medications pose several problems:
1) polluting lakes, rivers and drinking water
2) poisoning risk for small kids and teens
3) if passed along to another person, it may encourage others to dose themselves without a doctor's examination and prescription
It's estimated that 40% of the 4 billion prescriptions written each year go unused. To help prevent problems, dispose of leftover medications properly. Consult your local pharmacist and the following website about the safe disposal of prescription (and over-the-counter) medications:
